Haaland Shines on Norway National Team - World Cup 2026

Erling Haaland just showed up to his first World Cup and reminded everyone why he's the best striker on the planet. Norway beat Iraq 4-1 and Haaland scored two goals.

Haaland's World Cup Debut is Everything Norway Hoped For

It's his first World Cup and he didn't look nervous for a second. Haaland played the full 90 minutes at Gillette Stadium in Group I and finished with a brace. Norway put two goals past Iraq in each half and never looked in serious trouble. Haaland led the line from the front with his body, his runs, his finishing. It was the kind of performance Norway fans have been waiting years to see at a World Cup.

Haaland took five shots. Four of them were on target. Both goals came from inside the box one with his left foot, one with his right. His expected goals total was 1.85 and he actually scored 2. That's better than the model predicted. His shot conversion rate was 40 percent. For context that's efficient at any level of football. He also missed two big chances

He didn't score a penalty. He didn't hit the woodwork. He didn't get caught offside once. He just timed his runs found the ball inside the box and put it away. Haaland isn't just a finisher. He's a handful to deal with physically and Iraq felt that all night.

What the Touch Map Says About His Role

Haaland only touched the ball 20 times. But that's the point. His job isn't to drop deep and build play. His job is to be in the right place when it matters. Norway game plan is simple get the ball find the number 9 against Iraq that worked perfectly.

He completed four of nine passes and added one key pass. His carries gained around 30 meters. None of those carries were classed as progressive which shows how deep Iraq sat and how little space he had to run into. He still found a way to score twice.

What This Means for Norway Going Forward

Norway are through the first game. Three points in Group I. Haaland is on two goals already. Manager Stale Solbakken now has a clear blueprint protect the team shape, move the ball quickly and give Haaland chances inside the box.

The next match is coming and if Norway keep creating those chances inside the box Haaland is going to keep converting them. playing in his first World Cup and he already looks like the most dangerous striker in the tournament.

Haaland came to the World Cup to make an impact and he did that in 90 minutes. Norway look organised, dangerous and built around a player who can decide games on his own. Keep watching Group I it's going to be interesting.
