Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl.

Cream the butter with icing sugar to produce a smooth, light icing mixture.

Add vanilla essence to the mixture if required and stir well.

Add food colour to the mixture if required.

Put the icing mixture in a piping bag or icing set and decorate the cake.
