How to Make Mseto (Rice and Lentils) at Home Step by Step Recipe

Ingredients

  • 250g rice

  • 100g lentils (or green grams)

  • 2 onions

  • 150g grated coconut

  • 4g salt

  • 2g pepper (optional)

  • 30ml cooking oil

  • Water

Methods

  • Boil the lentils in just enough water to cover them.

  • Sort, wash and drain the rice.

  • Put the rice to boil. The boiling water should be at the same level as the rice.

  • Peel and slice the onions.

  • Prepare 200ml of coconut milk.

  • Fry the onion.

  • When the lentils are nearly ready, add them to the fried onions.

  • Add the rice to the lentils and onion.

  • Pour the coconut milk into the mixture and stir occasionally. The coconut milk should be just enough to finish cooking both rice and lentils without making the mixture too dry.

  • Cook slowly until ready and serve with a suitable garnish.
